Real Estate Postcard Sizes: A Quick Format Guide

Most agents pick a postcard size the same way they pick a font: whatever feels right in the moment. But size is one of the few decisions in a mail campaign that touches everything else — what it costs to print, what it costs to mail, how much room your message has to breathe, and whether it survives the walk from mailbox to recycling bin. Get it right once and you can reuse that decision for every campaign that follows.

Why Postcard Size Isn't Just a Design Detail

Every postcard size sits inside a different USPS postage category, and that category is set well before your card ever reaches a mailbox. Move from a compact card to a larger one and you can jump postage brackets entirely, sometimes doubling the mail cost of an otherwise identical campaign.

Size also decides how your card behaves once it lands. A small card gets shuffled with the rest of the stack and skimmed for two seconds. A larger card stands out physically before a homeowner reads a single word.

The Four Sizes Every Agent Should Know

Real estate mailers cluster around four standard sizes, each with its own strengths. Knowing what each one does well makes the choice a lot faster the next time you're planning a drop.

  • 4x6 — the workhorse size for quick-hit updates: just listed, just sold, price improvements. Cheapest to print and mail, and easy to send often.

  • 5x7 — a step up in visual weight, still budget-friendly, and a good fit for listing announcements that deserve a larger photo.

  • 6x9 — the standard for geographic farming, with enough room for a headline, a photo, and a short block of copy without feeling cramped.

  • 6x11 — the largest common format, best reserved for market reports, annual recaps, or anything with real data to display.

Matching Size to the Message

The mistake most agents make isn't picking a bad size, it's picking one size and using it for everything. A just-sold announcement and a quarterly farming touch are asking two very different things of the reader.

A quick transactional update wants speed: one photo, one line, one call to action, gone in three seconds. A farming piece or a market update wants a beat longer with the reader, which is exactly what a bigger card buys you.

A useful rule of thumb: the more the piece is meant to build familiarity over time rather than announce a single event, the more size it earns.

Postage Rules That Quietly Decide Your Format

USPS pricing is built around postcard dimensions, not around how good your card looks. Cards that fall outside standard postcard measurements often get reclassified as letters, which usually means a higher rate.

This matters most for EDDM campaigns and large farming lists, where a small per-piece difference compounds fast across hundreds or thousands of addresses. Before finalizing artwork, it's worth confirming the exact dimensions fall inside the postage class you're planning to use.

This is also where a lot of agents get surprised after the fact. A card that looked fine on screen can land in a different postage bracket once it's printed at actual size, so it pays to check before a full run goes to press.

From Your Artwork to Their Mailbox

Once you've settled on a size, the rest is execution. Bring us your artwork and we handle the rest — printed and mailed in-house at our Santa Ana facility, ordered and managed through our online ordering portal.

That in-house setup is what lets us hold tight turnaround times even on large geographic farming runs, since nothing has to travel between separate print and mail vendors before it hits a truck.

A Simple Way to Decide

If you only remember one thing from this guide, remember this: match the size to the job, not the other way around. A 4x6 for speed, a 6x9 for farming, a 6x11 when you have real numbers to show.

Pick a default size for each type of campaign you run regularly, lock it in, and you'll spend a lot less time re-deciding this every time you sit down to plan your next mailer.
